I'm not sure things are worse today than they've ever been.
We've had our share of scourges, wars, and plagues, over the years. But media, both news and social, have certainly brought everything to our attention in a way never before experienced. I think it's changed us. The shell is a little harder, the walls a little higher. We are insulating ourselves from the world in a way that I think has made us less "human". I have completely shut off the news media. I'm amazed that the public tunes in to see who was killed today, by gunfire, by starvation, by the weather, and by political and religious fanaticism. Apparently, death sells Mop N' Glo and Viagra.
Even social media is no stranger to calamity. Between Fukushima, Global Warming and GMOs, my feed is a cocktail of doom. Thank goodness for the jokes and dog videos. But, it's the friendships that keep me addicted to FB. I can't let go of those connections. I take a social media vacation during election time, when the vitriol reaches uncomfortable levels and our nation polarizes, but otherwise, I'm in, and I do look forward to seeing what all my buds are up to.
My project is people based. It is about being kinder in a world that constantly pushes us away from showing our feelings and being "real". It is not about getting rich or aspiring for more. It's about appreciating those that make an effort to keep kindness a recognizable human trait. This will be a social experiment, in real time.
I can't wait. I have no idea if this is the dumbest idea in the world or the best. I just can't help but think that it will be fun. It will feel good, I am absolutely sure.
